TTI Inc. Europe

Relevance:

TTI, Inc. Europe, Ganghoferstraße 34, 82216 Maisach-Gernlinden, Germany 35 Hänel Lean-Lifts® and 24 Hänel Multi-Space® storage systems guarantee maximum efficiency The Hänel solutions at TTI enable high-performance order picking with flexible management and rapid handling of tens of thousands of different SMD components Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, TTI, Inc. is a world-leading authorized distributor of electronic components. The Maisach-Gernlinden site plays a key role in TTI’s global network. To ensure the best possible storage and logistics processes at its European headquarters, the company has relied on Hänel’s advanced storage solutions for a number of years. TTI currently has a total of 59 Hänel vertical lifts in its ultra-modern central warehouse, including 35 Hänel Lean-Lifts® and 24 Hänel Multi-Space® 3-axis storage systems. Thanks to their high efficiency and an impressive storage capacity of more than 145,000 locations, the automatic Hänel lifts fulfill all key requirements of dynamic logistics processes. Vertical storage with maximum space utilization Hänel vertical lifts can be adapted flexibly to the existing space situation. At TTI, the Hänel Lean-Lifts® extend to heights of more than nine meters, while the Hänel Multi-Space® storage systems even reach up to 49,2 ft / 15 meters in height. With their some 9,500 containers, the lifts therefore offer an enormous amount of space by leveraging more than 193750 sq ft / 18,000 m² of vertical storage space within a total footprint of just around 8611 sq ft / 800 m². This extremely efficient use of vertical space is a feature of all Hänel storage solutions and offers ideal integration in existing storage concepts. 20 Hänel Multi-Space® storage systems, at a height of 15 m/49.21 ft, were designed to fit the existing ceiling height and are also fitted with a sprinkler system A terminal is available at each lift group with access to the management system, from where the relevant label is printed for each item on an order Thanks to the innovative design of the access points on the Hänel Multi-Space®, an employee can pick items in parallel on four lifts without the need to walk long distances To ensure the best possible flow of goods, the storage and retrieval processes are carried out in parallel across all access points Sustainability thanks to intelligent energy usage with the Hänel EcoDrive® All Hänel Multi-Space® storage systems at TTI are equipped with Hänel EcoDrive® technology. The integrated frequency converter transforms the kinetic energy of the descending extractor into electrical energy instead of allowing it to dissipate in the form of heat. The resulting energy that is recovered is fed back into the power grid and can therefore be used elsewhere. Depending on the rate of extractor travel, up to 40% of the energy required for the upward run can be recovered. This leads to considerable savings and therefore a reduction in running costs. Fast order processing thanks to optimized workflows The Hänel Multi-Space® allows containers to be delivered quickly from all lift modules due to the simultaneous vertical and horizontal movement of the extractor. The storage volume available centrally at just one issuing point is therefore enormous. The access points on the Multi-Space® 3-axis storage systems at TTI are designed to enable order picking simultaneously at four retrieval points. The stored items from a total of 12 lift modules can be quickly accessed in these four-way lift groups within minimal walking distances. This inherent advantage of the Multi-Space® system enables large-scale order picking with a minimum of staff. The requested SMD components for picking are then transported via a conveyor belt directly to the shipping department, from where they are dispatched together with other items on the customer order. Flexible scalability to meet growing requirements The first four Hänel Lean-Lifts® were installed as far back as 2010. As TTI grew, so too did the need for additional storage capacity, which led to the successive purchase of further Hänel systems over the years. These ongoing investments demonstrate that the Hänel solutions meet TTI’s high expectations in full as regards efficiency and reliability. TTI not only relies on the innovative Multi-Space® storage systems, but also the proven Hänel Lean-Lifts®. Space-saving and reliable storage of sensitive electronic These ultra-modern lift systems offer numerous advantages for ensuring reliable management and handling of SMD components. The Hänel Lean-Lifts® are designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing storage space and thus provide maximum storage capacity within a minimum footprint. The enclosed design of the Hänel storage systems also reliably protects sensitive electronic components against dust, dirt, and unauthorized access. Each item in the multifunction containers is labeled with a barcode and can be uniquely identified with a scanner An employee operates a number of Lean-Lifts® simultaneously. As the order volume increases, the picking rate can be improved dynamically by deploying additional employees When an item is retrieved, the order label is affixed to enable further processing in the shipping department Standardized processes and clearly structured workplaces mean that staff can work productively at all 59 lifts following a short training period All items picked from the Hänel lifts are transported directly to the central shipping department via the adjacent conveyor belt The available space is leveraged optimally thanks to the precise measurement of the height of items and the space-saving storage on the Hänel Profile Wall® The 35 Hänel Lean-Lifts® and 24 Hänel Multi-Space® storage systems offer enormous storage capacity for SMD components thanks to more than 145,000 storage locations – ensuring flexible and systematic handling of individual customer orders The barcode-based process reduces the potential for error when managing tens of thousands of different products Hänel’s innovative vertical technology minimizes storage and retrieval times, while the flexible height adjustment means that different stored articles can be stowed away in a structured and space-saving manner. The picking process on the Hänel solutions at TTI is standardized across the lift systems, which means that staff can be deployed at all 59 lifts following a short training period. Workplace ergonomics as a success factor TTI is committed to the highest safety and ergonomic standards at the workplace. The ergonomic design of the order picking process is optimized thanks to the use of Hänel vertical lifts. Staff can work efficiently without losing time due to long walking distances or searching for items. This allows for faster processing of orders and significantly boosts productivity. There is also less physical stress and strain on employees thanks to the convenient access heights and intuitive handling of the Hänel lifts. Work safety is improved as a result as well as employee satisfaction. Maximum storage density All containers in the Hänel vertical lifts are stored directly on the profiles of the Hänel Profile Wall®. The articles stored in every container that leaves the access point are measured automatically and precisely by the height-measuring light barriers. Containers at TTI are fitted with Hänel’s space-saving pitch technology and can therefore be transported to the profile wall in increments of 37.5 mm with no loss of space. The combination of optimum slot system, precise height measurement, and container slot allocation enables compact storage without any loss of space even when articles are of the most varied heights. Continuous investment in Hänel systems confirms the high level of customer satisfaction and trust in the quality of Hänel storage solutions. To keep pace with growing requirements, TTI is planning further expansion at the Maisach site and has already ordered ten additional Hänel Multi-Space® storage systems. Because the multifunctional containers can be divided flexibly, a vast range of SMD reels can be supplied safely and with structured organization Every storage process is coordinated at a terminal from the central TTI management system. The containers in question are then requested via the Hänel MP 12 N lift controller "Hänel’s logistics solutions offer us maximum flexibility for designing our storage space and allow our employees to operate up to four lifts at the same time. The reliability of the vertical lifts combined with the excellent customer support and rapid response times have made Hänel a valued partner for TTI for many years." 100 Years Gerhard Hänel

Relevance:

100 Years Gerhard Hänel An entrepreneur of distinction Gerhard Hänel devoted his whole life... Gerhard Hänel devoted his whole life... The youngest of four siblings, Gerhard Hänel was born in Lauter, Saxony, on June 30th, 1909. A fresh start in Bad Friedrichshall A fresh start in Bad Friedrichshall At the start of the ’50s Gerhard Hänel went to West Germany on business. The Hanel Paternoster The Hänel vertical carousel – an ingenious principle In 1957 he was the first person in Europe to series-produce filing carousels designed according to the Ferris wheel principle. A leader – an inspiration Memories from the perspective of a contemporary For almost 40 years I had the privilege of accompanying Gerhard Hänel through his professional life – 7 years as a business associate and 33 working for him directly. . The youngest of four siblings, Gerhard Hänel was born in Lauter, Saxony, on June 30th, 1909. His parents owned a grocery store and the familyprospered. When he was 13 his father died and his mother had to bring up the 4 children alone. Even so, they never had to go without. At the age of 14 he became a locksmith‘s apprentice, at 20 he finished his engineering studies, and soon he found a job at a well-known company in Hessen producing steel furniture. In 1933 when he was 24 years old he became self-employed, setting up business on his parents‘ property with borrowed money. At first it was a one-man operation, until he got together the facilities for building steel furniture by renovating used machinery and building his own paintshop, drying furnace and power generator. However, he was not given approval to operate a spot-welding machine from the mains power network. ‘That was the first punch below the belt I received from the authorities.’ Quotation from G. Hänel In 1936 Gerhard Hänel married his first wife Hilde, but she was unfortunately killed in an accident in 1949. This marriage produced his daughter Ingrid and son Gerd. In the neighboring town of Neuwelt he found a large plot of land, this time with a power current connection, on Talstraße close to the railway. He moved into the new building in 1939. With the start of the war, steel was rationed and he also had to look around for new customers. He developed and produced metal containers for the safe transport of highly sensitive optical devices for the company of Zeiss-Jena and its subsidiary plants. ‘With the lack of sheet steel, there was only one slogan: Make new out of old.’ Quotation from G. Hänel An economy of scarcity prevailed in Germany in the post-war years, so he attached a follow-on tool to a long bending press, used it to slit open empty bomb casings and recrafted them into sheet metal blanks. The parts were then annealed and formed into new utility objects. Frying pans were extremely popular, as were other items such as clips for preserving jars. bild Gerhard Hänel‘s first production hall in Schwarzenberg-Neuwelt Graduation certificates (grade: Excellent) from the Zwickau Engineering School in 1929 text At the start of the ’50s Gerhard Hänel went to West Germany on business. It was here that he met his second wife Liselotte. After the wedding she accompanied her husband to East Germany where their first son Michael was born in 1951. ‘But with all the duplication of work, I always yearned for the free West and my former customers, who were now experiencing a revival.’ Quotation from G. Hänel Gerhard Hänel saw no commercial future in East Germany and sought a new opening in the West. This was where their second son Joachim was born in 1953. By 1952 he had relocated with his wife Liselotte to Stuttgart where Liselotte‘s parents lived and one year later started ‘from scratch’ in Bad Friedrichshall. Working from what he called a ‘wooden shed’ he built mobile cupboards and hairdressers’ cabinets. Business expanded quickly. Then one day when Gerhard Hänel saw some automated office carousels in an American brochure he thought: ‘I can do that.’ Gerhard bild2 Gerhard Hänel with his wife Liselotte and their two sons Michael and Joachim The first production building in Bad Friedrichshall text2 In 1957 he was the first person in Europe to series-produce filing carousels designed according to the Ferris wheel principle. His nephew Karl-Bruno Hänel supported him as Plant Manager from the very beginning, helping to put his ideas and developments into practice. The Hänel filing carousels were distributed through a renowned vendor of hanging folders until the end of the ‘60s. By 1958, following the purchase of a plot of land, he was able to increase output in a newly built production hall. With demand increasing steadily, production was expanded further in 1968, and another manufacturing plant was set up in Wiesentheid. In the same year he also founded the Hänel Gear Factory, which was initially installed at the company headquarters then moved into its own building three years later. In 1971 the first Hänel filing carousel was sold under the name of ‘Mikros’ as the Hänel company‘s own product. Thanks to Gerhard Hänel‘s continuous refinement of the Ferris wheel principle, he was soon able to add heavy-duty vertical carousels for industrial use to his product portfolio. The Hänel Rotomat® industrial carousels were born. 1972 saw the laying of the foundation stone for Hänel Plant 3 in Altstätten, Switzerland. Now Kurt Velmeke was successfully expanding sales and Dieter Carl promoting the export of Hänel Rotomat® carousels. Branches were established in the US, France and the Netherlands. At the age of 65 he handed over the management of the company to his two sons. The company of Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems has remained in the hands of the Hänel family since it was founded. But in Gerhard Hänel‘s view, this was no reason to take things easy. At 85 years of age he still played a decisive role in the development and production of the Hänel Lean-Lift® with vertical lift technology. Among other things he invented the Hänel profile wall. By doing so he set new standards in intralogistics. This ingenious design is still the basis for the reliability and durability of the Hänel Lean-Lift® and the Hänel Multi-Space® which was launched in 2005. With his business vision, Gerhard Hänel turned Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems into a globally active company with distributors in over 60 countries. Today Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems remains the world‘s oldest existing manufacturer of vertical carousels for the office! text3 For almost 40 years I had the privilege of accompanying Gerhard Hänel through his professional life – 7 years as a business associate and 33 working for him directly. Initially I came into contact with Mr. Hänel as his customer when I was working as Sales Manager for a renowned vendor of filing equipment. He supplied us with index-card and filing paternosters for resale purposes. During my many encounters with Mr. Hänel, I came to appreciate his straightforwardness, his technical expertise and his sincere and courteous manner. Mr. Hänel was not satisfied with simply producing systems to customer specification. He simultaneously developed an innovative range of card-index and filing carousels on his own initiative. These attracted a great deal of attention worldwide because of their revolutionary technology and cutting-edge design. Following the death of the owner of the company that had been his main customer, there was a gradual cessation of dealings between the two firms. Mr. Hänel wanted to detach himself from such dependencies so that he could later hand over to his sons a flourishing business with its own sales division. The second phase of my association with Mr. Hänel began on April 1st, 1971, when I came to work for him directly. When his company started its own sales activities, Mr. Hänel had two administrative employees in the in-house sales department and myself as Sales Manager. His entrepreneurial thinking, combined with an aptitude for incisive and quick decision-making, ensured a healthy, continuous upward trend. We worked together for 33 years – a long period which shaped me professionally and personally. On the rare occasions that our opinions differed, the debate always took place objectively without once escalating to the personal level. Gerhard Hänel had an exceptional ability to promote the company‘s interests in a goal-oriented way using his outstanding leadership qualities, while at the same time showing his employees their value and constantly motivating them in their shared tasks. Can there be any better résumé of one‘s life than to say: “Je ne regrette rien“. If I had to choose again today, I would without hesitation opt for the enlightening and personally fulfilling years I worked with Mr. Gerhard Hänel. Kurt Velmeke I couldn‘t have done it all... ‘I couldn‘t have done it all without my wife’ A swim early in the morning and then again in the evening – that‘s how Gerhard Hänel kept fit. . . . . . . . text4 ‘Ohne meine Frau hätte ich das alles nicht geschafft’ A swim early in the morning and then again in the evening – that‘s how Gerhard Hänel kept fit. He didn‘t need any other leisure activities: “The shop floor is my hobby”. Gerhard Hänel was a very disciplined person. “Moderation in all things” was his principle in life. Liselotte Hänel was a vital support to her husband throughout his life, both at home and at work. “If I hadn‘t had this woman as my life companion,” said Gerhard Hänel, “I couldn‘t have done it all”.
