Hänel Provides Climate Control System for CSL Behring AG

Relevance:

Climate controlled pharmaceutical storage Hänel Rotomat Vertical Carousel Bern, Switzerland CSL Behring AG is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of medications derived from blood plasma. At locations in Bern (Switzerland), Marburg (Germany) and Kankakee (USA), production facilities equipped with the latest technology manufacture valuable medications in compliance with international standards governing safety and quality. GMP guidelines According to the strict GMP quality assurance guidelines, sufficient reference samples must be taken for every batch of medication produced just in case retesting may be required, and the identification number of the product and the package insert leaflet must be archived for one year after the product expiration date. Each step is documented with special software each time the employee scans the QR code above the retrieval point. Automated Storage In the past the storage of sensitive reference samples of medications was a manual process – today six vertical Hänel Rotomat® systems are used. All of these automated systems are operated in a cluster based on the latest warehouse management software. Climate control/air conditioning The air conditioning and ventilation system in the Hänel systems keeps the storage temperature at a constant 68 °F. Every hour approx. 523 cubic yards of air is exchanged in each Rotomat®. The systems are enclosed to ensure optimal climate control. Special indicators above the lift systems light up to show when a put or pick operation is being carried out on a specific Rotomat®. When the system stops rotating, the indicator goes off and a sliding door on the Rotomat® opens automatically. The samples are kept in some 33,000 bottles at 67,000 positions on the Hänel multifunction carriers, where they are protected from light and dust. The cluster comprising six climatecontrolled Hänel Rotomat® systems offers space-saving, flexible and secure storage for the reference samples of medications at CSL Behring AG! The complex storage process based on paper lists and sliding shelves is a thing of the past – and there is no more dangerous ladder-climbing and stretching to retrieve pharmaceutical samples In compliance with strict GMP guidelines, every step of the storage process is documented using special software (on the monitor in the foreground) to support quality assurance Up to 67,000 product reference samples can be stored on the Hänel multifunction carriers, fully protected from dust and light

ISL Anniversary

ISL Anniversary 10 years of cooperation with the Hänel company Welcoming address by Joachim Hänel Dear Richard, Dear Lukasz, Dear Employees of ISL, This year your company celebrates its 10th anniversary and hence also 10 years of collaboration with Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems. These 10 years have flown by. But in a time when our society is undergoing constant change, they are a sign of mutual trust. I associate these past 10 years above all with good times and shared successes. When I look back, I see that this collaboration was made possible by the vision and the courage of you, Richard Lucas. You developed your own concept and, with a very large contribution from Lukasz Kantoch, you implemented it. You took what you saw in our company that fitted well into your concept, adapted it, and you incorporated and factored in Polish national characteristics and strengths. With this approach you set out with your team on this successful journey on the Polish market. You used the time well and expanded the market gradually. Today it can be said that you play a leading role in the field of “automated vertical lifts and carousels” in Poland. This is one of the reasons Hänel awarded you the title of “Most successful partner 2005”. On top of this, you made yet another contribution this year with your “VendiShelf” product and as such have become a partner in the opposite direction – as a supplier of ideas and products. The first step on this road was taken with the global launch of VendiShelf at CeMAT 2011, the world’s leading trade fair for intralogistics. Dear Richard, Dear Lukasz, Dear Employees of ISL, please accept my personal thanks for your untiring commitment over these last 10 years. I wish you and your entire company continued success for the coming years and I hope our constructive cooperation will continue in the same spirit. Yours, Joachim Hänel Chief Executive Sales

Energy efficient systems with the Hänel EcoConcept: EcoDrive, EcoMode, EcoLoad

Relevance:

The Hänel EcoConcept An energy-efficient and eco-friendly development from Hänel For more than 10 years Hänel has been developing effective energy-saving technologies for automated storage systems and intralogistics Even when it comes to automated storage and material handling, business enterprises are placing increased emphasis on the importance of sustainability and environmental protection to save precious natural resources. In 2008 Hänel developed and launched the Hänel EcoConcept with various features for reducing energy consumption in Hänel storage systems. These systems have been further enhanced over the past 10 years and are in operation at customer sites around the world. The effective energy consumption of automated material and file handling systems has a major impact on operating costs, amortization, and not least on environmental protection. For this reason we have always placed great emphasis on continually optimizing the energy efficiency of our storage systems. Energy-efficient systems are the key to sustainability in your warehouse Hänel EcoDrive® The built-in frequency converter converts the kinetic energy of the descending extractor into electrical energy and feeds it back into the electrical supply system. This recovers up to 40 % of the energy required by the storage system, depending on the rate of extractor travel. Hänel EcoLoad® Continuous monitoring of the load situation in the Rotomat® and adherence to the storage recommendations ensures that balanced load distribution is achieved. As a result, only minimal energy is needed to set the storage system in motion. Hänel EcoMode® With this standby technology, all systems that consume energy, even when at standstill, are shut down by the control system in four (energy-saving) EcoMode® levels. This minimizes the energy intake of Hänel storage systems when they are idle for extended periods of time. Our specialists will continue to work on the Hänel EcoConcept and develop further energy-efficient solutions for Hänel storage systems – for the sake of the environment!

Press release | Refrigerated & Frozen Foods

Relevance:

New solutions move product up and out The AS/RS market is expected to witness a CAGR of 10.18% during the forecast period 2019-2024, according to the mordor Intelligence study. And, most of this is due in large part to never AS/RS developments designed to move product up and out. For instance, Viastore introduced fully integrated refrigerated and frozen pallet AS/RS for production, distribution and 3PL support, including automated layer picking, semi-automated individual case picking and automated transport to the shipping dock. For its part, Hanel introduced Smart Picking, a pick-and-put system that relies on commercially available "off-the-shelf" web devices. Hanel also introduced a Lean-Lift Vertical Lift Module enabled with storage system operation via smartglasses, which is said to be the first solution of its kind worldwide. A user wears smartglasses to view inventory information in one lens of the glasses while performing warehouse transactions through pick-by-voice. The user verbalizes the desired shelf to be brought from storage, and the Hanel unit automatically brings it to the access point. And, Swisslog worked with Stemilt Growers to help the Wenatchee, Wash.-based grower and distributor of fresh fruits consolidate inventory into one automated distribution center. "Very clear-automation drives improved performance and reliability vs. manual operations," says Leber. "Reliability of automation today is far better than what has been experienced in the past, in large part due to loT, or better termed 'remote monitoring/remediation.' Moving forward, condition monitoring of key components is starting to replace time-scheduled preventative maintenance, further reducing costs and increasing up times." Swisslog is also developing a "digital twin" model of the key drive component that enables supervisory controls to perform proactive part changes upon end-of-life, and alert end-users of components performing outside acceptable norms. Despite the influx of more complex supply chains, today's AS/RS are in position to handle variability, variety and high volume at higher speeds. Refrigerated & Frozen Foods 1 MB

Efficient & Fast Space Saving Storage: Hänel Vertical Storage

Relevance:

Storage of electrical wiring and security systems Hänel vertical storage: efficient, fast and space-saving h-team in Calw, Germany, is just the right provider when it comes to data communication systems, machine wiring and security systems. The company, with headquarters in the Black Forest, has been growing its business consistently over the past 12 years. To ensure quick and flexible delivery logistics, h-team installed ten Hänel Lean-Lifts® in its new building in Calw. These vertical storage systems will ensure that enough space is available for the expanding product portfolio, both now and in the future. What's more, the new Lean-Lifts® are also equipped with Hänel EcoMode® to save energy. According to variable time intervals chosen by the customer, this feature gradually shuts down various system components in four steps until each system reaches standby mode when the Lean-Lifts® are not in operation. The systems are then quickly reactivated when operations begin again. The h-team configuration comprises two clusters, each with five vertical lifts installed next to each other. This enables simultaneous order picking with several systems to support fast and efficient processing. Employees simply scan the article barcode shown on the order. Each Hänel system then automatically transports the right storage container to the retrieval point. One key advantage of flexible Hänel systems is the easy conversion or rearrangement of storage space in the systems to address future requirements. When h-team moved into its new building, the Hänel service team was at the site – the move was completed in just five days. Employees at h-team worked hand in hand with Hänel specialists. The distribution center went into operation right on schedule, keeping downtime to an absolute minimum. In addition, the vertical Hänel systems were augmented and adjusted to fit the height of the new building. This is possible at any time thanks to the flexible and variable design of Hänel storage systems. Another important aspect is the reliable performance of Hänel systems, which is supported by 24-hour service on more than 300 days per year, not to mention efficient monitoring and diagnostic systems, plus the availability of Hänel service engineers whenever needed.

The perfect laboratory storage solution

Relevance:

Rotomat® storage systems optimize the storage of ingredients in the mixing laboratory Unilever | Heilbronn, Germany Unilever is known for its future-oriented business approach and the constant optimization of processes. For example, Unilever focused on ergonomic working conditions, fast access times, space savings and flexibility when designing its new ingredients storage area for the mixing laboratory in the company’s development center in Heilbronn, Germany. This was important for its Knorr brand of products: Today three Hänel Rotomat® systems store the ingredients needed for developing soup and sauce recipes, all within an extremely small footprint, and with fast and convenient access. Space-saving and ergonomic storage with the Hänel Rotomat® In collaboration with the works physician, the company recently evaluated the work environment in the manual storage area for the mixing laboratory at the Unilever site in Heilbronn. The R & D site-support manager, Thomas Bösch, also manages the mixing laboratory and explains the importance of the evaluation: “The analytic study was focused on all work processes in the laboratory. The entire raw materials warehouse needed to be reorganized for more ergonomics so that employees would not have to constantly bend over or lift items above their heads.” In collaboration with Hänel experts, some 1,300 ingredients such as croutons and spices were analyzed and stored in two variants of special storage bins designed for three Hänel Rotomat® systems. The multifunction carriers in the Rotomat® systems each have 24 single or 12 double-sized bins. All of the bins have barcodes for automatic scanning. Seamless integration in the host system The Hänel central controller keeps a record of the bin locations. The modern microprocessor controllers fully integrate the Hänel storage systems in the Unilever host system. Pick and put operations are conducted automatically with barcode scanners. For example, when a bin is returned to inventory, the barcode is scanned and the Rotomat® automatically brings the correct carrier to the access point. Integrated LED indicators at the access point light up to show employees the exact position of each storage bin, thus making the process much faster. Project manager Thomas Bösch is very pleased with the results: “Thanks to the ergonomic access points, constant bending, stretching and reaching for ingredients are things of the past. Our developers and laboratory technicians now use touch-screen terminals and consoles attached to the storage systems to retrieve ingredients for recipes much faster – and simultaneously. The ‘goods to man’ picking process keeps storage routing at minimum levels. What’s more, these optimized access processes increase overall efficiency and productivity.” ‘The greatest compliment, however, is reflected in the employee satisfaction that comes from working with Hänel systems!’ The ergonomics in the mixing laboratory have been considerably improved thanks to three Hänel Rotomat® systems Seamless integration of the Rotomat® storage systems in the Unilever sample tracing system

Premium Whiskey Storage: Hänel Lean-Lifts®

Premium whiskey storage Hänel Lean-Lift Vertical Lift Module The origins of the company reach back to the mid-nineteenth century when William Robertson founded the Robertson & Baxter company in Glasgow. Highland Distillers, established in 1887, was acquired by Edrington in 1999. Today the company’s well-known brands include ‘The Famous Grouse’, ‘The Macallan’ and ‘Highland Park,’ which are available in international markets. With an annual production capacity of more than 17 million litres, Edrington also owns 50 percent of the North British Distillery, which also has a production capacity of 60 million litres of alcohol annually. The range of premium whiskies produced requires special storage to protect the bottles from dust and dirt, and to ensure complete product trace-ability. At the company site in Glasgow, five Hänel Lean-Lifts® are in operation – two of them are equipped with access protection and are located in a separate and secure area of the building complex. The lifts are protected by automatic sliding doors and an access control function integrated in the MP 12 N controller. An authorized code is required to access the systems. Fire protection is ensured through the installation of two smoke detectors and an inert gas system inside the storage systems. If smoke is detected by the first device, an alarm signal alerts employees of possible impending danger. If the second smoke detector is triggered, inert argon gas is released from several large gas cylinders located outside the storage systems. The argon gas enters the systems and displaces the oxygen inside, thus extinguishing the fire. The other lift systems are used to store spare parts and tools directly in the production area so that the limited floor space inside the building complex can be fully and efficiently utilized. Hanging File Storage for Efficient Archiving Processes

Relevance:

Archive and material sample storage Ready for Internet commerce and online business success The ergonomic access point of the Rotomat® office carousel makes for fast, efficient and route-optimized archiving processes. The Witt Group is one of Europe's leading mail order retailers of clothing and textiles. In peak seasons up to 100,000 orders are shipped every day. Witt is a member of the Otto Group and, with its mail order catalog and 19 online shops, does business in 12 countries. To cope with expected business growth, the Witt Group has invested heavily in the expansion of its shipping and distribution center in Weiden, Germany. The Witt Group relies on Hänel storage expertise and technology when it comes to document archiving. Two Hänel Rotomat® office carousel systems were installed to automate the inspection documentation archive and the material samples collection for better process efficiency. "In the past documents were sorted, compiled and kept in DIN A4 ring binders according to item numbers. However, as our range of clothing expanded enormously, our document and sample archiving was getting out of control," says Petra Irlbacher, administration team manager for goods inspection. Today the inspection documents are neatly sorted and archived in vertical DIN A4 hanging folders in two Hänel Rotomat® office carousels. All hanging folders have barcode labels and, thanks to the vertical Ferris wheel principle of the Hänel systems, the archives take up very little space. Unlike the complex archiving based on item numbers and binders kept on shelves, the Hänel Rotomat® solution is more efficient because each hanging folder is assigned a product model number. The advantage: The barcode label on the folder ensures that each product model has only one storage position in the archive system. When a file is removed from the system, the space is no longer occupied and is thus available for allocation to another product model. All item data and product descriptions are stored in Witt's own enterprise IT management system, and this information is also displayed on the terminal of each Hänel office carousel during archiving and retrieval. Hänel management software controls both office carousels and communicates seamlessly with the enterprise host system used at Witt. Each Hänel Rotomat® has 12 shelves, and each shelf is fitted with eight pull-out units for 92 vertical DIN A4 hanging folders. A frequency converter makes sure that the vertical rotation within the system is smooth and quiet. When goods arrive at the Witt Group, they are assigned a consignment number that is entered in the IT system. The data required for retrieving the inspection documents is automatically entered in the Rotomat® storage carousel at the same time. Since the storage systems are seamlessly integrated in the IT environment at the Witt Group, all filing processes are controlled and documented using scanners and keyboards installed on the Hänel Rotomat® office carousels. The ergonomic access point of the Rotomat® office carousel makes for fast, efficient and route-optimized archiving processes. The Witt Group is one of Europe's leading mail order retailers of clothing and textiles. In peak seasons up to 100,000 orders are shipped every day.

Compact storage for Aircraft parts Safe and Reliable storage Allaero Limited, founded in 1988 and located between London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports, delivers high-quality aviation products. The portfolio includes a complete range of aircraft replacement parts such as engines, auxiliary power units and wing components. Additional items such as oils, lubricants and sealants and diverse hardware components are also offered. Originally the company relied on a simple pallet storage concept, but after just a few years Allaero was confronted with a number of issues. Parts retrieval was not ergonomic, and the capacity for storing components of varying sizes and shapes was reaching its limits. Even after the installation of two Hänel Lean-Lifts® in 2009, the need for storage space to accommodate aircraft parts continued to grow. Today 12 Hänel Lean-Lifts® are in operation at the company’s site in Crawley. To store large components safely and reliably, two Hänel lifts were equipped with an extra-high access point. Components measuring up to 1,350 mm in height can be stored in the systems with a high degree of ergonomics, not to mention space savings. The Hänel Lean-Lift® is especially well-suited for storing small and medium-sized parts. Customized system mechanisms for storing components like wheels and landing gear make the Hänel Lean-Lift® a universal storage solution. Another advantage for employees is the extraordinary ease of use derived from the ergonomic provisioning of various aircraft components. Accurate identification of items in storage is ensured with appropriate labeling. The storage system cluster is managed centrally with the MP 100 D control system. A complete inventory list of all the items stored in each lift system can be requested at any time from the control terminal. Thus employees have a complete and updated overview of the storage situation at all times. Three Lean-Lifts® equipped with EcoDrive® optimize the energy footprint of warehouse operations through intelligent energy recovery. For storing complete aircraft wings, one extra-wide Lean-Lift® is being added to the Hänel cluster. The Hänel Demo Center will contain five Lean-Lift® vertical lift modules, two Rotomat® vertical carousels and one ColdCell Rotomat® refrigerated vertical carousel. These automated storage and retrieval systems condense several warehouse racks into a minimal footprint, by making use of available room height. In addition to functioning as showcase machines, these units will also serve their intended purpose to reduce the amount of dedicated warehouse floor space, by storing spare parts, project files, literature, office supplies and other materials. If not for Hänel’s vertical storage units to house these items, the facility’s warehouse would need to be 80 percent larger. Visitors to the facility will be greeted by a 20-foot-tall Lean-Lift®, a system that is best for storing items of varying height. The lift automatically measures the height of items on each shelf, and they are stored away in the ideal location inside the unit. This eliminates wasted space between shelves, and maximizes space utilization at all times. The lobby unit will have clear plexiglass sides, so visitors can view its internal mechanisms. About Hänel Storage Systems Founded in Germany in 1953, Hänel’s North American headquarters has been located in Pittsburgh, PA since it was established in 1984 Hänel Storage Systems specializes in the design and engineering of Rotomat® vertical storage carousels and Lean-Lift® Vertical Lift Modules for a wide range of industries and applications. Hänel provides sales, service and technical support to North and South America through a network of factory-trained channel partners and service providers. Introduced in 1957, the Hänel Rotomat® Vertical Carousel is based on the Ferris Wheel principle. Inventory is stored in a series of carriers that rotate within an enclosed unit and are accessed at a single opening. This vertical “goods to the user” concept improves productivity, lowers costs, increases security and saves valuable floor space. Introduced in 1994, the Hänel Lean-Lift® Vertical Lift Module stores inventory on trays that are automatically measured for height each time they enter the unit. A vertical extractor places each tray within the unit in a location that maximizes available storage space. Trays can be equipped with dividers, totes, bins and specialized holders to store any type of inventory.

Kasys Partnership With Hänel Storage Systems

Relevance:

Twenty years of successful cooperation between Hänel Storage Systems and Kasys Dear Business Partners with your Families and Employees, This year Kasys celebrates its 20th anniversary and hence also 20 years of collaboration with Hänel. These 20 years have flown by. There have been ups and downs, but in a time when our society is undergoing constant change, these 20 years have been marked by mutual trust and shared successes. Looking back, we realize that this collaboration was only made possible by one of the most profound political and economic changes to take place worldwide over the last few decades: the fall of the "Iron Curtain". The crisis was at the same time an opportunity for a fresh start. Our first contact with Kasys was established by Udo Wagner in 1992. He had already worked with Mr. Sole during his employment at the "VEB Kombinat Robotron". This personal relationship was a mutual reference and was the foundation of their trust in each other. When I look back, I see that this collaboration was made possible by the vision and the courage of Vaclav Sole. Although he came from what appeared at first glance to be a very different branch of industry, Mr. Sole quickly made the decision to work with Hänel. Today you can say with pride that Kasys was our first distribution partner from the former Warsaw Pact states after the fall of the "Iron Curtain". By choosing Hänel, Kasys of course opted for a strong partner who is listed today both in the "Encyclopaedia of World Market Leaders" and in the compendium entitled "The best of German engineering". The know-how that has been built up in all areas over many years is a key factor in our collaboration and a prerequisite for our shared market success. These 20 years have been shaped by the establishment and continuous expansion of joint activities on the Czech and Slovakian markets. At the beginning, banks and public authorities made up the greater part of the Kasys customer base. The very first office carousel, for example, was delivered to the Tachov Savings Bank at the end of 1993. Four more Rotomat® office carousels went to the Czech Insurance company, two of them featuring multiple access openings. Our Export Manager at the time, Dieter Carl, was present on site for all of these projects. Since then, Rotomat® industrial carousels have also been supplied to renowned companies like Skoda, Siemens and Bosch. One of the largest office carousel installations in the world can be found in the Czech Republic at the Czech Office for Social Security where there are a total of 232 Rotomat® office carousels. Back in 1996 our collaboration with Mr. Smolen was established for the Slovakian market. This was a logical step that also had its historical reasons. Moreover, it was a good decision to pool the sales people on these two markets. Sales of office carousels continue to be a very important branch of the business today. At the same time, Kasys has set up the industrial lift business and is constantly expanding it. I am certain this is the right way forward and an important step into the future. The relationship between Hänel and Kasys has matured in all areas and become closer. Our partnership in business works in principle like a marriage. It is based on give and take. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once said, "A good marriage is not when we look at one another, but when we both look in the same direction". With this in mind, our former Export Manager Dieter Carl laid the first foundations here for a cooperative partnership. When the baton was passed to Markus Kälin, this strengthened the relationship between Kasys and Hänel Switzerland, and I think that friendships have developed there both under Dieter Carl and under Markus Kälin. Now our task is to consolidate what we began and expand on it. The dialog we engage in over the coming days should serve to determine our way forward together. The political and economic turmoil especially of the last few months presents us increasingly with major challenges in Europe and throughout the world as a whole. Standing shoulder to shoulder is more essential than ever. This also means that we must always seek and find ways to communicate openly. Dear Family Sole, Family Smolen, employees of Kasys and Hänel employees, I would like to give you my personal thanks for your untiring commitment these past 20 years. I wish you and your company, and all your employees, lots of luck and all the best for the coming years, and I hope that as we move toward the future our successful cooperation will continue in the same spirit. Yours in friendship, Joachim Hänel

Hanel Lean-Lift : Vertical Storage Systems to support inventory

Relevance:

Just-in-time tablet press storage for the production line Hänel Lean-Lift® vertical storage systems support component inventory for just-in-time production of tablet presses With production capacity running in high gear, KORSCH AG in Berlin, the specialist for tablet pressing machinery, demonstrates that market demand for its innovative technology continues to rise. To keep pace with this demand, the flow of material to the assembly lines for various types of tablet presses must be efficient and uninterrupted. With this goal in mind, KORSCH reorganized processes and installed 12 Hänel Lean-Lift® vertical storage systems, along with HänelSoft® warehouse management software, for its inventory of small and medium-sized production components. The modern vertical lifts support inventory control and the continuity required for a reliable flow of material and just-in-time manufacturing. Today 90 percent of all internal material flow processes are managed with the Hänel lift systems. KORSCH tablet presses first launched in 1919 KORSCH specializes in the development and production of tablet presses as well as systems for controllers, tablet inspection and data analytics – and has been doing so since 1919. The tablet presses are made in Berlin, Germany, and are in operation around the world. Bernd Magirius, Head of Material Management at KORSCH, explains: “The basis for development and production is our extensive know-how. We are able to offer solutions for nearly every requirement in tablet compression applications. Our products include special presses for research and development, rotary presses for scale-up businesses and for the production of medium-sized batches, not to mention high-performance presses for 24-hour operation.” Revenue growth required restructuring of materials management “In the early 1980s we developed and produced circuit boards for tablet press control units ourselves. The small parts needed for the circuit boards were kept in two Rotomat® storage carousels from Hänel; medium-sized and large parts were stored in bins or on pallets in our high-bay warehouse. With the ‘goods to man’ storage and retrieval machine (SRM), the order picker can work independently and fill job orders for the assembly lines,” says Bernd Magirius. The strong revenue growth of recent years meant that access to items needed for production processes increased dramatically. “We urgently needed a new solution! The bottleneck was the timeconsuming picking process with only one SRM. We reorganized our production warehouse and deployed Navision as our new ERP system: 12 Hänel Lean-Lift® systems were purchased for storing small and medium-sized production components. Today we are able to fill orders for items needed in manufacturing much faster and more efficiently thanks to the ‘goods to man’ principle.” Hänel lifts are used to manage 90 percent of the material flow processes Up to 1,000 items are picked in the production warehouse every day. The pick rate has increased due to strong business growth – in fact, over the past five years the pick rate has doubled! Last year alone the number of pick transactions jumped from 800 to 1,000 per day thanks to the vertical storage systems. Bernd Magirius adds: “Today we manage 90 percent of our material flow with the vertical lift systems. The height-optimized storage provided by the lift systems – from floor to ceiling – results in enormous storage density for maximum capacity. This is a decisive factor because our range of components has grown dramatically. Our inventory has doubled within just two years! The new lifts are absolutely vital for our inventory management processes.” Secure inventory management Some 25,000 articles are stored at 30,000 positions in the production warehouse. Thus the number of positions exceeds the number of articles in stock because when an item is put on inventory, a new storage position is set up along with a batch number in the Navision ERP system, which then sends this number to HänelSoft . For example, if an item not used by the assembly line is returned to the production warehouse, it is assigned a new batch number and put back on inventory in a new storage position. Taking a defined article strategy and optimized routing into account, HänelSoft uses an automatic search function to find the optimal storage position for the article. All put and pick transactions are initiated through Navision and sent in the form of jobs via an interface to HänelSoft. Navision serves as the overarching inventory system and specifies the quantities listed in the job orders. When the jobs are completed, all job data is automatically sent via the interface to Navision for processing. This ensures that the precise inventory status is available at all times. This approach is based on material demand and enables efficient management of just-in-time production. Batch job orders and dynamic lift groups for parallel prepositioning saves time during picking Hänel Pick-o-Light®-Vario precisely identifies articles specified for picking. Sales, development, manufacturing and service are located at KORSCH headquarters in Berlin, Germany. When production is at its peak, four order pickers operate several lifts in order to fill job orders at the same time. For situations of this kind HänelSoft has an option for defining lift groups that run simultaneously to support fast and dynamic picking. In addition, single jobs can be combined using the aggregated order function on the user interface of HänelSoft – this enables optimized routing and picking in one process step. For example, if a job order is called up on one Lean-Lift , the container of the nearest neighboring lift carrying the next order item is already transported to the access point – this saves an enormous amount of time during item retrieval. Once picking has been completed, the operator presses a button to confirm the transaction and the retrieval data is recorded in the warehouse management system. The picking cycle continues as the next container is advanced to the access point. If only one employee is picking items (for example, on weekends), the vertical lift systems are operated as a cluster. The containers in all 12 Lean-Lift systems can be automatically prepositioned as needed to optimize processes: The vertical lift systems are equipped with photoelectric barriers that enable fully automated transport of the lift containers. Clever put and pick transactions Put and pick operations are performed simultaneously. Putting items into storage is supported by the graphical presentation of the container and its bins as shown on the controller display. One container can accommodate up to eight bins for large components like flange and grate systems, or up to 192 bins for small items like nuts and bolts. Bernd Magirius: “The graphical presentation of the container layout, along with the various bins, enables us to immediately find the right location for an item based on its size. This approach is ideal for conducting put operations on lift systems that are not being momentarily used for pick operations. What’s more, we also don’t have to enter an item’s dimensions into the software – and that saves time.” No mix-ups with Hänel Pick-o-Light®-Vario The Pick-o-Light®-Vario system from Hänel is comprised of a moving LED pointer installed inside on the panel above the Lean-Lift® access point – it shines a beam of light on the items which should be retrieved from the container. When picking items from up to 192 bins on one container, the Hänel Pick-o-Light®-Vario system really does reduce mix-ups and picking errors. Two operators for order picking: Container prepositioning saves additional time. The quantities of picked items are confirmed in HänelSoft® and the picking cycle continues without interruption. The new Hänel vertical lifts support the flow of material required for just-in-time production.
