CeMAT special exhibit: Innovative logistics solutions At the special exhibition ”Innovative Logistics Solutions” in Hall 27, a number of innovative solutions for complex logistics processes in industrial environments were showcased. Several enterprises collaborated to present a joint exhibit that illustrated the latest developments for realizing modern and efficient supply chains. Some 30 companies participated in the demonstrations conducted in the special exhibition area. Hänel Office and Industrial Storage Systems partnered with viastore SOFTWARE and contributed a Lean-Lift® to the intralogistics concept presented in the exhibit. The Hänel Lean-Lift® played a key role in this demonstration. Presorted products were placed in bins and then stored centrally in the Hänel Lean-Lift®. Hänel Storage Systems Sponsors Leader Dogs for the Blind Hänel Storage Systems has sponsored a puppy from Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester Hills, MI. Portillo is a five-month-old Labrador/Golden Retriever mix currently being raised by a volunteer family in Illinois. Her personality is described as sassy and inquisitive, and her own tail is her favorite toy. The puppy's parents will teach her basic obedience and housetraining and socialize her in her environment. She is one of more than 400 puppies being raised in the U.S. to become the eyes and ears of a blind person. After a year, Portillo will go to Leader Dog's campus for intensive four-month training to build her skills as a guide dog. Eventually, she will be paired with a companion, and they will train together for 25 days to learn how to travel safely. New solutions move product up and out The AS/RS market is expected to witness a CAGR of 10.18% during the forecast period 2019-2024, according to the mordor Intelligence study. And, most of this is due in large part to never AS/RS developments designed to move product up and out. For instance, Viastore introduced fully integrated refrigerated and frozen pallet AS/RS for production, distribution and 3PL support, including automated layer picking, semi-automated individual case picking and automated transport to the shipping dock. For its part, Hanel introduced Smart Picking, a pick-and-put system that relies on commercially available "off-the-shelf" web devices. Hanel also introduced a Lean-Lift Vertical Lift Module enabled with storage system operation via smartglasses, which is said to be the first solution of its kind worldwide. A user wears smartglasses to view inventory information in one lens of the glasses while performing warehouse transactions through pick-by-voice. The user verbalizes the desired shelf to be brought from storage, and the Hanel unit automatically brings it to the access point. And, Swisslog worked with Stemilt Growers to help the Wenatchee, Wash.-based grower and distributor of fresh fruits consolidate inventory into one automated distribution center. "Very clear-automation drives improved performance and reliability vs. manual operations," says Leber. "Reliability of automation today is far better than what has been experienced in the past, in large part due to loT, or better termed 'remote monitoring/remediation.' Moving forward, condition monitoring of key components is starting to replace time-scheduled preventative maintenance, further reducing costs and increasing up times." Swisslog is also developing a "digital twin" model of the key drive component that enables supervisory controls to perform proactive part changes upon end-of-life, and alert end-users of components performing outside acceptable norms. CeMAT 2018 International Trade Fair High interest in Hänel innovations and storage systems among industry professionals Digital networks – the main theme at CeMAT 2018 The Motto Logistics 4.0 meets Industry 4.0 was used to integrate CeMAT in the Hanover Fair this year. The coupling of both events thus gave thousands of visitors to the Hanover Fair a chance to experience CeMAT as well. Many industry professionals used that opportunity to visit the Hänel stand to see the intelligent innovations offered for intralogistics. Hänel focused on six main topics at the exhibition – which included informative live presentations as well. TQ-Systems GmbH Carousel storage optimizes production logistics TQ-Systems, a German electronics provider in Seefeld near Munich, relies on 45 Hänel Rotomat® storage systems to optimize production logistics. LACOM/TS communications software and the LACOM/IDOC server are used for intelligent and flexible coordination of the put and pick operations for SMD and THT components in the storage carousels. The Hänel systems replaced decentralized storage areas where employees manually retrieved items for various assembly lines. This process is now centralized, automated and extremely efficient. At TQ-Systems' Seefeld headquarters in the Bavarian region of Germany, some 70,000 storage positions in the Hänel Rotomat® solution are included in the customer's SAP WM module. Most positions are allocated for electronic SMD and THT components. The Rotomat® storage carousels have effectively optimized warehouse logistics so that more productivity can be achieved without the need for additional employees. Various types of supply systems provide the items needed for production – trolleys transport the components from the central warehouse in the basement to the assembly area on the ground floor. Careful planning and constant expansion of the new Hänel Rotomat® storage solution optimized the storage density in the carousels – from the floor to the ceiling. Based on precise requirement planning by TQ-Systems, Hänel fitted the storage carousels with special profiles to accommodate intermediate, split-level shelves. The addition of variable dividers ensures an optimal storage density of nearly 100 percent. Hänel LACOM/TS communications software and the LACOM/IDOC server provide the fast and direct channel that connects the storage carousels with the SAP warehouse management system. All storage data is managed centrally in SAP, including storage and retrieval operations that are communicated as transport orders to the LACOM/TS application via the IDOC interface. Thus multiple job orders can be filled simultaneously on several storage carousel systems. During put and pick operations, item packaging is scanned for data that activates inventory control in SAP – inventory levels are automatically compared and adjusted in real time without interrupting the IT chain. The intelligent Hänel communications software LACOM/TS also regulates user management and access rights. This means, for example, that two lockable Rotomat® systems in the cluster can be operated manually and separately as consignment storage systems. To prevent potential damage from ESD, the internal components of each storage carousel are coated with an antistatic finish. What's more, the buildup of static electricity on the carriers is prevented by brass bushings mounted in the carrying levers. Each system is also equipped with an electromechanical safety switch and a photoelectric safety light curtain at the access point.

Hänel Storage Systems' Vertical Carousel and Lift Systems are Used Worldwide Hänel Storage Systems is a manufacturer of automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS). Its two primary products are the Rotomat® vertical carousel and Lean-Lift® vertical lift module. Oetiker Deutschland GmbH Endingen Solutions from viadat connects four Hänel Lean-Lifts® to central SAP server in Switzerland The Oetiker Group is one of the world’s leading makers of clamps and connectors for industrial applications and for companies that deliver components to the automotive industry. The company has 12 manufacturing sites around the world. To reduce the costs of freight and logistics, six independent sales and logistics centers in Europe were relocated and consolidated at the company site in Endingen/Kaiserstuhl, Germany. This project also included the integration of four Hänel Lean-Lift® systems that had previously been used as a stand-alone solution in the central warehouse. Once a customer order is received, a sales order for the transaction is generated in SAP and sent to the viadat terminal. Viadat then sends the transport command to the Hänel MP 12 N-HostCom controller at the Lean-Lifts®. The system cluster is distributed across two areas, each having two Hänel Lean-Lifts® and one terminal with 15 pack-to-light systems. A cart with 15 shipping cartons is docked at the pick zone, and a signal array is assigned to each carton. The two Hänel Lean-Lifts® in the first pick zone automatically bring specified items to the access point, where Hänel Pick-o-Light®-Vario identifies them with an LED to minimize picking errors. The Hänel Lean-Lifts® deliver the products according to the FIFO principle. Retrieval is complete when the article number is scanned at the terminal – there is no need to confirm the transaction on the lift controller. Once items have been placed in the carton, the operator simply confirms the order using the signal array panel. Then viadat uses IDoc to confirm the retrieval from the Hänel Lean-Lift® and the pick list is marked as “completed” on the SAP delivery order. Thanks to the integration of the four Hänel Lean-Lifts® in the SAP-based logistics concept, the Oetiker Group transformed the Endingen/Kaiserstuhl site into a central distribution center for all of Europe – with great success! Efficient production of building materials with label storage in vertical lift system Knauf is a family business based in Iphofen, Germany, and is one of the leading producers of building materials and construction systems in Europe. It uses a Hänel Lean-Lift® to store 895,000 labels for around 1,000 chemical products manufactured for the construction industry, taking up a footprint of merely ten square meters. With height-optimized container storage, the entire space from floor to ceiling is used, thus freeing up costly floor space.
